The Best Challah French Toast You’ll Ever Try

Ingredients

  • 4 extra large eggs, plus 2 yolks
  • 2 cups of milk
  • 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon of lemon zest
  • 1 teaspoon of ground cardamom
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1/2 cup of cream
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 2 1/2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • About 8-10 slices  (1 1/4-inch-thick) slices of challah
  • 1/4 cup of granulated sugar
  • 5 tablespoons of powdered sugar (optional)

Directions

  1. Gather ingredients.
  2. In a medium shallow baking dish or bowl, beat eggs with milk, cinnamon, vanilla, and nutmeg until blended.
  3. Working with all challah slices, soak bread in egg mixture for 30 minutes, turning it over at 15 minutes.
  4. Meanwhile, melt the butter in a large, heavy skillet over medium-low until bubbling. Add two-four of the soaked challah slices and cook until golden brown on the bottom, about 2 minutes. Turn and cook until golden brown on the second side, about 2 minutes longer. Repeat with remaining egg-soaked challah.
  5. Serve hot with freshly whipped cream with cinnamon, cardamom, sugar mixture and powdered sugar if desired.
  6. Indulge and enjoy.
